Vilakazi Street

Known the world over for once housing both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Vilakazi's reputation has since become inextricably tied to that of the Nobel Peace Prize.  On June 16, 1976, the streets of that same area in Soweto were littered with the bodies of black children who were protesting against the use of Afrikaans as the language of instruction, as well as those of a tiny number of white people who were stoned to death when they got caught up between police gunfire and the storming demonstrators. Guided Vredefort Dome Tour

This is the most significant meteorite impact that geologists have yet found on Earth, and it is nearly twice as big as the impact that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The meteorite impact in the Free State made a crater about 300 km wide (from Johannesburg to Welkom!). This makes it a site of great importance for scientists. It is also the oldest impact crater that has been found on Earth. It is mainly for these reasons that it has been made a World Heritage Site. More about Impact Dome Tours.

Wonder Cave and Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve

Italian miners discovered the cave in 1898. They mined approximately 15% of the formation and brought them to the surface. The building consists of calcite which they placed in a self-built oven for two weeks at about 1100 degrees. This formed a powder taken by ox wagon to Pretoria & Johannesburg to make cement, toothpaste, extract gold and the like. Mining was stopped in 1902 due to the outbreak of war and low productivity. This is the 3rd largest chamber in South Africa, the largest being Cango Caves and the second largest Sudwala Caves.  More about the Wonder Cave.

The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, "The Nearest Faraway Place", is a privately owned game reserve covering some 1200 hectares which opened to the public in 1990. After humble beginnings, visitors may now view more than 650 heads of game, including some scarce and endangered species. The reserve falls within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (COHWHS). More about the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve.
