International Literacy Day - 8 September 2025
Celebrate International Literacy Day with NWU Library and Information Service (LIS)
This year, we’re embracing a fresh and dynamic approach to International Literacy Day by exploring the many literacies essential in today’s interconnected world: Information Literacy, Digital Literacy, AI Literacy, and Reading Literacy. In an era where human knowledge, digital tools, and artificial intelligence converge, literacy extends far beyond reading and writing; it’s about finding, evaluating, creating, and ethically using information across multiple formats.
Our programme offers a platform for dialogue, artistic expression, and knowledge-sharing, empowering students and communities alike. Aligned with South Africa’s Heritage Month, the event will reflect on how these literacies connect to cultural identity, heritage preservation, academic success, and responsible digital citizenship. Under the theme “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era”, we’ll explore the role of information literacy in fostering cross-cultural understanding and promoting peace through multilingual education.
