Research Tools

Research tools are used for data analysis and enable researchers to make better decisions with data. 

  • ATLAS.ti - This is a computer program used primarily, but not exclusively, in qualitative research or qualitative data analysis. Tutorials and videos.
    • Students must arrange with their lecturers/supervisors to download ATLAS.ti
    • Staff can download Atlas.ti from the NWU IT Support web page under Staff>Software Downloads>Atlas TI.
       
  • IBM SPSS - Helps to address the entire analytical process, from planning to data collection to analysis, reporting, and deployment. 
     
  • OpenRefine - OpenRefine (formerly Google Refine) is a powerful tool for cleaning messy data, transforming it from one format into another, and extending it with web services and external data. How to use OpenRefine. [OpenSource]

  • STATISTICA - Provides the most comprehensive array of data analysis, data management, visualisation, and mining procedures.   • R - R is open-source software for data manipulation, calculation, and graphical display. [R is installed on the Research and Honours Commons computers.]

Getting the software

Mahikeng Campus: 

Potchefstroom Campus:

  • Students: For Laptop installation of the software, please use the Walk-In services at Building F20 or contact your IT department at +27(0)18 299 2700. 
  • Staff: To download the programs, use the IT App Portal.
  • Postgraduate students and researchers may use these software programs on the computers in the Research and Honours Commons.
